Discovering the Internet

A week ago, if somebody would have asked how well I know the Internet, I would say quite well. I started using Twitter (friend me: MaartenFM) a week ago and now…the Internet is a whole new place!

I was on Twitter for about three month, but didn’t know anybody so I quickly lost interest. Then I went to TheNextWeb conference last week and started adding people I met… *BOOM* Twitter changed! And I changed too.

Normally, when I wake up…the first thing I do is move the mouse (I leave my iMac in sleep mode, sorry Al Gore…), check my email, go to Google Reader, read all unread items (well, most of them) and then take a shower and continue with offline activities like showering (would be cool if I could browse in the shower), consuming my beloved cereal and then go to work (by motorcycle, don’t want to browse there).

But now, I wake up…move the mouse, check my email (nothing changed so far) and read up everything that’s been posted. About half of all cool stories I no longer read through Google Reader, but through Twitter. Don’t think I’ll let go of Reader just yet though…

Another thing, cool sites. I heard about FriendFeed but didn’t register right away cause I didn’t know if I would like it. But then I saw a few people talking about and tried it out…and I can definitely see why it is getting more populair. It’s like a new start page.

So basically what I’m saying is. If you think you know the Internet, you don’t. There’s always something you’ve missed. I can’t believe I missed out on Twitter… But it’s kinda cool arriving so late…cause it gives me the feeling of a new cool era just waiting to unfold.

Don’t you just love the Internet?

Getting started

I hate first posts, it’s like making pasta for the first time. You know it will not be your best pasta, some people may like it, some people won’t. But in order to be a good ‘pasta maker’, you need to start somewhere (does this make any sense?).

Quick intro on maarten.fm. Bought this domain about 6 months ago because it was:

  1. cool (hell yeah!)
  2. short and kinda catchy (though most people have trouble spelling my name)
  3. wanted to start a blog
  4. But most importantly….it was available!

I’m not planning a web radio station, not competing with Last.FM (they rock, friend me: copperfx), I like music and will probably dedicate a few posts to music…but this is not a music site in any way :-)

What can you expect from maarten.fm?

  1. stuff that interests me (technology/gadgets/fun stuff)
  2. my p.o.v. of the web and all its interesting little hidden stuff
  3. random rants on any subject I feel like ranting about
  4. video posts on any of the above, but most likely the fun stuff or the ranting
Ok, gonna wrap it up. First pasta made…this time, no sauce, just pasta…
